Write a letter to the company to:
- explain the reason you are not available
- reassure them of your commitment
- propose a solution
Dear Sir or Madam,
I was a successful candidate for the position of assistant IT manager at your company and was to begin on 1st May. However, it is with regret that I need to inform you that I am unable to commence work, and request a two-week delay.
Sadly, my mother has had an accident which paralysed her and therefore I must return home and arrange home care for her. I truly cannot be absent at such a difficult time as my mother is a widow and very old.
I am very devoted to work for your reputable company and it would be natural for you to presume that this could be a recurring issue. Nevertheless, my sister is returning home from abroad and she will look after our mother during her recovery. Also, I must emphasise that my mother is extremely anxious not to interfere my career in any way and wish for me to further my career at your company.
Under the circumstances, I am pleased to spend a few days with the present manager before I leave, if this is convenient for you. Of course, it would be unpaid.
I hope you understand my situation and that we will come to an arrangement. Should you wish to discuss the matter further, please do not hesitate to contact me.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Sarah Ash
